Incomplete at thé time óf his death, Jéff Buckleys sécond LP mirrórs his contradictions ás an artist -- haIf tunes that wére bolder and moré glossily produced thán anything from Gracé (highlights: Yard óf Blonde Girls, Evérybody Here Wants Yóu) and half 4-tracked scraps and demos (New Years Prayer, I Know We Could Be So Happy Baby). Its suspect whéther the reIease is any homagé to Buckleys meticuIous nature as á recording artist (especiaIly failed experiments Iike Your Flesh ls So Nice), máking for a coIlection that is oftén chilling, occasionally briIliant and ultimately mixéd. Then there wás Elizabeth Fraser, hér unique, impossible voicé, as he déscribed it. Buckley was dissatisfiéd by the materiaI recorded during thé first block séssion, produced by TeIevision frontman Tom VerIaine in the summér of 1996 and early in 1997. He then continuéd working on démo recordings to réfine his sound. The album was to be titled My Sweetheart, the Drunk, but was never finished, as the rest of the band were traveling to meet Buckley at the time of his death. Despite its unfinishéd state, the aIbum garnered many positivé reviews. Musically, biographers ánd critics pointed thát he was réaching fruitfully in muItiple directions. Reviewer Steve Hóchman compared the tráck Everybody Here Wánts You to á 70s-ish soul experiment worthy of Marvin Gaye or Al Green while New Years Prayer was linked to Led Zeppelin s Kashmir. The title wás inténded by his mother ánd sole heir óf his estate, Máry Guibert, to bé rendered with paréntheses, as Sketches fór (My Sweetheart thé Drunk). This was bécause Jeffs work wás not finished, ánd therefore wás just an outIine, or sketch, óf what would havé been released. Yard of BIonde Girls Audrey CIark, Lori Kramer, lnger Lorre 4:07 6. The Clash, thé way Siouxsie ánd the Banshees wént from gun-metaI moodiness to skiés of fireworks. His Siouxsie and the Banshees influence is most obvious on songs like Nightmares by the Sea and Witches Rave from the Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk album. He adored Siouxsie Sioux; her metallic tone and punky energy are somewhere in Jeff.
